A Romantic Dream in White...
Every year Rothenburg is transformed from a summer paradise into a winter wonderland. The city invites its visitors this enchanting atmosphere at the Christmas Market, called the "Reiterlesmarkt". This market dates back to the 15th century and is therefore one of the oldest in Germany.
Its name refers to an old Teutonic legend. In pre-Christian times, the Teutons believed in a rider who took cared of the souls of the dead. Whereas the Teutons feared this mystic figure, the attitude towards him changed in the Middle Ages. Now, everyone waited eagerly for his arrival because, according to the legend, he was transformed from a wild, crude man into a friendly messenger bringing gifts to people everywhere on earth. A painting of this famous rider can be seen on the facade of the Town Hall.
However, on occasions the rider comes to life: whenever the market is open or when the town's children conduct their candlelight procession. Serenity is a hallmark of this market, where citizens and tourists meet to share a cup of the traditional Glühwein, a hot, mulled wine.
