Historic town still inspires artists and writers

An extended walk through the streets of Rothenburg’s old town, exploring what goes on behind the facades, experiencing the pleasure of the view from the fortified walls to the beautiful woods and meadows of the Tauber Valley: what more could you need to understand the close ties between the town of Rothenburg and art and artists.

Crime, romance, poetry or even comics - there are many books about Rothenburg.

Poetic inspiration

Rothenburg has been in the grip of romanticism for over 150 years. The principles that were important to visual artists like Carl Spitzweg or Wassily Kandinsky were equally significant for the major names in German literature, such as Friedrich Rückert or Erich Maria Remarque. Like the painters, the writers also regarded the town as a refuge from restless, insistent modernism, an idyllic place of contemplation and a source of artistic inspiration.

The romantic tradition has been successfully preserved for the last two centuries in literature in particular. Quite apart from its association with historical dramas drawing on folklore, Rothenburg also retains a living tradition of poetry and prose. Important writers and thinkers are regular visitors to the town, with readings being held at the various cultural sites, particularly at places of historic significance. Venues range from the former barn “Johanniterscheune” in the Museum of Medieval Crime and the Imperial Town Museum, to the Wildbad or the municipal library, covering classic poetry, contemporary short stories, essays or even short historical papers: whatever the time of year, book lovers will always find something to delight them in Rothenburg.

Innovative art in action

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a picturesque place in the best meaning of the word: its facades and festivities are a riot of color, while its architectural heritage, including sacred, secular and public buildings, is unrivalled. A wealth of important art treasures can be found here to admire, for example the Altar of the Holy Blood in the Church of St. James, created by Tilman Riemenschneider around 1500. All over the world there are important works of art that have been inspired by Rothenburg ob der Tauber – such as Wassily Kandinsky’s 1902 work entitled “Old Town”.

Rothenburg is not just a treasure trove of historical artifacts, but also a place where the art of today and tomorrow is created. Evidence of the extreme vitality of artistic life in Rothenburg can be found in the large number of studios, galleries and permanent and temporary exhibitions around the town. The most important venue for contemporary art in the town is the Rothenburg Artists’ Collective, which was founded in 1923 and which has around 200 members. Anyone looking for an excellent overview of the contemporary artists working in Rothenburg will find plenty to satisfy their curiosity at the former Meat and Dance House on the Market Square. The permanent exhibition on show there contains a generous selection of exhibits from the freelance members of the Collective.

It is hard to provide a comprehensive account of the exhibition spaces and studios of all the artists living and working in Rothenburg. Here is a small representative sample:
