History vault – the museum above the Rothenburg dungeon

Deep beneath the Gothic town hall wing are the former dungeons of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, where the legendary mayor Heinrich Toppler (around 1340 to 1408) once landed. The underground cells can still be viewed via the history vault of the historical festival “Der Meistertrunk” association.

A selected collection of original weapons, flags and uniforms take the history vault into the Period of the Thirty Years' War. Some scenes from everyday life from that time are recreated.

A dungeon, but not a show

As a Rothenburg Dungeon The history dungeon is also advertised for English-speaking guests. But unlike its namesakes in Hamburg or London, this is less about shock effects and the show, but rather about the real oppression of a real one medieval prison cell. You enter the Rothenburg dungeon through one narrow, low gear – it is dark here, the stones are wet and cold. And then when you're in front of the... three cells one can easily imagine how oppressive imprisonment in these dark holes must once have been. There is a striking one in front of the cells Wooden stretching bench – the only shock effect added later in the Rothenburg dungeon. Apparently no one was tortured in the cellars.

The exhibition in the history vault - an association that shapes the city

Located above the dungeon, you can find it Exhibition of the historical festival “The Master Drink”, which explains the events in the 30 Years' War and includes original exhibits gives an impression of the warfare of that time. A flag from the bad times bears witness to the fighting she experienced. Also many of the careful restored weapons and uniforms, which are on display in the museum, were once in use - and some of them can still clearly be seen.
