“Enjoy ob der Tauber” is a culinary initiative by leading innkeepers and hoteliers from Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

The dishes come from the great Franconian and Hohenlohe cuisine. These dishes have always been influenced by wine and are prepared from what nature offers in our homeland: for example, the Wettringer Tauberapfel or the Franconian Grünkern (the half-ripe spelled grain). There are, for example, the products from the mills along the Tauber and the good meat from the lambs from Franconia and Hohenlohe. Goose and duck are also included, as are deer and deer from our hunters.

Some things are simple, like the Lenten dishes of the Way of St. James pilgrims. Some things are special, like the Tauber snails or the seasoning with Franconian saffron.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber needs wine to survive. This should be taken literally: what other city can claim that it was saved by a sip of 3 1/4 liters of wine?

This legendary story of the master drink from the 30 Years' War is only a small part of the Rothenburgers' love affair with Franconian wine: the southernmost point of the traditional wine-growing region can be found directly under the city wall of An der Eich. You can take 90-minute tours of the Thürauf family's vineyard at the Glocke winery with the winemaker himself. Or you can try the fine wines in the wine cellar at Plönlein. The winery's winery is located on Johannitergasse, outside Rothenburg's old town.

Wine cuisine comes into focus every August, when local innkeepers and winemakers come together to form the wine village.

The famous Rothenburg snowballs are a culinary souvenir or a wonderful dessert. This regional specialty, which stands out because of its peculiar shape, is made from shortcrust pastry according to a centuries-old recipe.

Original snowballs are served with powdered sugar - classic in white. Of course, there are now variations for chocolate lovers and every taste.

As is well known, beer has always been brewed for different occasions in different strengths. Rothenburg ob der Tauber, with its prominent location on long-distance trade and pilgrimage routes, had to offer travelers and pilgrims fortifying food during Lent, especially in the Middle Ages - this also included the strong beer known as Lenten beer.

Today, about 6 km north of Rothenburg in Reichelshofen, there is the Landwehr-Bräu, a medium-sized private brewery in which beers have been brewed according to old traditions since 1755 from local raw materials and with Franconian craftsmanship. A special feature of the 13 types of beer produced is the traditional Franconian red beer, which was invented in Middle Franconia around 1300 and quickly became the most brewed and most popular beer. Today, long cold storage and four special barley malts give this “Landwehr-Bräu Rotfränkisch” its unique character. The Landwehr-Bräu can be explored on various brewery tours.

Beer brewed in Rothenburg is available from Mr. Berger in the Hotel Markusturm. He only sells his product fresh in his own restaurant. We say: Cheers!

Under the motto regional buffet, inns, farmers and trading companies in Romantic Franconia have come together in a joint initiative to strengthen regionality. They all stand for the production or use of particularly fresh and high-quality products from the region, for excellent quality and the best enjoyment.

The chefs at the inns use these products to conjure up tasty dishes that are marked on the menus with the logo as a seal of quality. This seal may only be awarded if the ingredients for it come from direct marketers from the regional buffet. In this way, the regional buffet combines ecological aspects, such as the care of the landscape, species-appropriate animal husbandry and short transport routes, with the advantages of the best taste for the guests.
