Special exhibition: "Elise Mahler - 'painting woman', intrepid artist and entrepreneur" in the RothenburgMuseum
From April 20, 2024, a special exhibition in the RothenburgMuseum will take a look at the works of the artist Elise Mahler. Mahler once settled in Rothenburg with the firm intention of earning a living here with her painting. Together with Maria Ressel (1877-1945) she founded a painting school for women, which soon found great popularity. Ridiculed by their male colleagues or denigrated as “painting women” and “turpentiners,” the two women asserted themselves energetically and only left the city after twenty years.
This era, in which attention to the feminine as a social and political factor in Germany increased, is honored in the new special exhibition in the RothenburgMuseum. On their extensive study trips, Mahler and Ressel looked far beyond convention and created compositions full of vivid power.
The show will be on view in the gallery rooms of the RothenburgMuseum from April 20, 2024 to December 31, 2024. The curator is Dr. Helmuth Möhring (former director of the museum and member of the museum's circle of friends).

Special exhibition: "Children, children, how time flies - 'Roedeburcher' childhoods from 1900 to 1950" in the RothenburgMuseum
Television, Western orientation, secondary school education for all, and later the Internet and globalization significantly changed the lives of children in Germany from the 1950s onwards.
But how did previous generations live and experience their childhood? As part of our special exhibition, we look back to the period from 1900 to 1950 and provide insights into the school days, leisure time and everyday life of the children living back then.
The objects in this exhibition are on loan from Rothenburgers and residents of the surrounding area, who, together with their memories, bring the time back a little to life.

Special exhibition “The Weapons of an Imperial City” in the RothenburgMuseum
As part of the festival year "750 Years of the Imperial City of Rothenburg ob der Tauber", the RothenburgMuseum is opening the special exhibition "The Weapons of an Imperial City" in June, which will then be on display there until December 31.12.2025, XNUMX.
As independent communities, imperial cities had to defend their rights and property. In addition, imperial cities also expanded their territory and their legal titles with weapons, but what “weapons” were they in each case? "Weapons" must be understood here in a multiple sense: as actual material weapons made of iron, but also in a figurative sense as, so to speak, "weapons" for asserting interests in the political, legal, economic and social areas. In some cases, financial resources, legal title and legal submissions could be more effective than many handguns. With the Baumann Collection, the RothenburgMuseum has one of the largest weapons collections in Germany. The dormitory and ballroom will be completely redesigned for the purpose of the special exhibition and will clearly show the confrontation between urban bourgeois and rural and aristocratic weapon systems.

Exhibition: “inderSchwebe” with works by Brigitte Schwacke in Wildbad Rothenburg
From April 31.03.2024th, XNUMX The exhibition “inderSchwebe” by the artist Brigitte Schwacke can be seen as part of the “KUNSTPUNKTE” format in Rothenburger Wildbad.
It is the third exhibition in the “KUNSTPUNKTE” format, which was launched in the Wildbad in 2021. It offers a further platform for contemporary artistic works – in addition to the highly acclaimed art project “art residency wildbad”. For this purpose, the western staircase of the Wildbad is used in the form of a cabinet exhibition. At the same time, works and objects are presented at selected locations in the house as artistic interventions.
The artist Brigitte Schwacke is a border crosser. Whether sculpture, photography or drawing, she always moves within the border areas of the individual genres. With her works she leaves the viewer in uncertainty, in limbo with the interfaces of these categories. Whether sculpture or three-dimensional drawing, object or installation, spatial exclusion or shape creation, the transitions are fluid, the classification remains open.
In the exhibition it is possible to experience almost the entire range of her creative world. The sensitive works are composed into the sophisticated architecture of the Wildbad and enter into dialogue with it. Her works enable interior and exterior views, changes of perspective and open up new visual axes. At the interfaces of figuration and abstraction, the artist evokes the viewer's power of imagination.
The exhibition is open on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 19 p.m. and on Sundays from 8 a.m. to 17 p.m. (from October 8th from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.). Admission is free.
The Wildbad also cordially invites you to the opening of the exhibition on Sunday, March 31, 2024 from 16 p.m. to 17:30 p.m. Admission is free, thank you very much.
